Our Fearless Leaders
Chairwoman Cynthia King
Who Am I?
Born in Washington, D.C., politics is a big part of who I am. Growing up in Ohio, I played at my parents’ feet as they worked on political campaigns and held several positions of student leadership. My parents moves us to Sparks, NV when I was twelve, and I was accepted into the Jump Start, finishing my Junior and Senior year of High School as student at TMCC. Unfortunately, I was in a sever car accident in 2000, which put me on the journey to becoming disabled. Despite this I graduated from TMCC with an Associates of General Studies, and opened a small party planning business.
In 2008, I became deathly ill and I had to let go of all my dreams to save my life. One thing I learned during this time was that patience, persistence, and passion create new dreams. I re-learned how to manage my disability, then opened a freelance editing services business, and served as Director of Communication for a non-profit called High Sierra Writers for seven years.
In 2015, I joined Wolf PAC and volunteered for the Sanders Campaign for his Presidential Candidate Run. I led his Douglas County Delegates to the State Convention. In 2016, I became a Central Committee Member of Douglas Democrats of Nevada and a Nevada State CC Member representing Douglas County, NV, as well as joined the Justice Democrats. Since then, I’ve increased my volunteering for the Democratic Party, serving on Democratic Organization Boards, and working on campaigns up and down ticket around Nevada.
My current positions are:
Chair of the Nevada Democratic Accessibility Caucus
Chair of the Douglas County Democrats of Nevada
First Vice President of the Nevada Federation of Democratic Women
Nevada State Central Committee Member representing Douglas County.
Currently a member of:
Douglas County Democratic Women
Nevada Democratic Women’s Caucus
Nevada Democratic Rural Caucus
Second Vice Chair
Alex Hiike, MPA
Who am I?
I am the Second Vice Chair of the Nevada Democratic Accessibility Caucus, bringing twenty years of West Coast political experience to the role. I have served as the Political Director of NASW-CA, a statewide trade organization for social workers, targeted swing voters as Data Manager at the California Democratic Party, and have served in numerous disability services organizations. I hold a bachelor’s degree in political science from Sacramento State and a master’s in public administration from CSU Dominguez Hills, where I earned honors from Pi Alpha Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi.
I have triumphed with the odds stacked against me all my life. I was born with Cerebral Palsy and Right Hemiplegia; my parents were told I would never be able to walk or talk. Instead, by the time I was four, I rewired everything in my brain and stormed into my neurologist’s office, bragging about passing every test. By the time I was twelve, I was reading at a PhD level. It is why I strive every day to leave the biggest positive impact on the world I can and have spent my career advocating for more disability services. I have seen the impact the ADA, IDEA, and Section 504 have had on my life and others like me. I have met incredible people through my work with people with disabilities who have outlived every limitation they’ve faced.
Today, I am completely embedded in my disability community. I am waiting for an appointment to be completed to the Governor’s Council on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. I currently working with ARC of Nevada, where I organize outings for people with disabilities and the annual Excellence in Nursing Awards Gala.
I currently live in the Southern Highlands neighborhood of Enterprise, NV, with my white little fluff ball, Tilly. In my downtime, I love to eat at fine dining restaurants around Las Vegas, catch the latest big-budget tentpole event on streaming and the theater, or at a once-in-a-lifetime rock concert on The Strip.
My current positions:
Second Vice Chair of the Nevada Democratic Accessibility Caucus
Precinct Captain of Clark County Democratic Central Committee
Nevada Democratic State Central Committee Member representing Clark
Council Member of Nevada Governor’s Council on Disabilities.
Currently a member of:
Clark County Democratic Central Committee
Secretary Cathy McKean
Who Am I?
I am Cathy McKean, hailing from the great county of Churchill, home of the top gun training facility of Fallon Naval Air Station (go Navy!).
I am pretty active. I have been the food pantry coordinator for one of our local church pantries, serving 8% of our community families per month. I have participated in several community events such as color runs, race for life, and coordinated the Democrat booth at the Cantaloupe Festival (our local County Fair).
In my community, I represent the bar tenders, waitresses, grocery workers, and convenience store workers, so it’s not a leap to include the challenged; I am one myself. Everyone deserves a voice.
I also have experience as Secretary for the Churchill County Democrats.
I look forward to advocating for rights that are currently being taken away from the underserved, and I have developed the resource list for the NVDAC website. That list will continue to develop as I network.
I look forward to meeting you all and working with you.
Mahalo,
Cathy
